The New Monarchs decided to take a deliberate step into a heavier realm of electronic rock as they began constructing their second full length album, Stay Awake. Singer-guitarist Sean Hogan and multi-instrumentalist Taylor Nelson (also of trip-hop duo Wiping out Thousands) were both in a state of reincarnation, both growing in song craft and direction. The duo teamed up with Adam Tucker at Signaturetone Recording in Minneapolis to co-produce the album, providing a broader palate and glossier finish than previous releases.

The album opens with eerie guitars and droning keyboards before seeping into an onslaught of industrial power. Stay Awake reconciles heartbreak with the shame resulting from hangovers and translucent lovers and converts them into a sense of stability.
